A Quick Update
From the inSync Asylum
Between the end of October 2021 and late January 2022 , I recorded the album ‘Black and Grey’, which was my second Live From the inSync Asylum’ collection of songs. I’ve been thinking about doing it again ever since, and have finally started, nearly two and a half years later.
The process is basically picking an old song of mine to revisit, one that has most likely not been sung or performed by me for many years.
As with Black and Grey, this time around I’ve been recording without headphones, or monitoring the electric guitars (due to a nasty bout with vertigo years back). This lends itself to a quieter reading of the tune, which is a vibe I like as the years pile up. I can later run the guitars thru some VST amp sims in the remix. When I do multiple takes as I did on the recently released Caught by Your Heartbeat single, I can also do a comp mix when necessary.
One change that is different this time around is how I filmed the recording. Since the last time around, I have discovered a little bit about 4K video, and have learned I don’t have to record separate video files for each webcam I’m using. Last time I had an older Dell XPS pc and two web cams – which was a bit much when recording a live Cubase session as well. This time around it’s a new Dell XPS and three webcams, and the process seems to be working.
I’m using OBS with a 5760x1080 canvas with three webcams. I can then import that one clip into Premiere Pro, and have it on three different tracks, zoomed to a particular cam. Lot less stress on the pc that way, which is also recording a live vocal and guitar track at the same time in Cubase.
I call the performances part of my ‘No Rhyme or Reason’ tour. A nod to my small but appreciated audience. Hopefully you’ll tune in from time to time and send me your two cents of comments….
